IFRA certificate

What are the IFRA standards ?

The IFRA certificate is documented proof that the product complies with the applicable IFRA standards.

The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) develops voluntary guidelines, known as IFRA Standards. These standards ensure consumer safety and protection when using fragrances. They define the maximum recommended levels of certain ingredients that may pose risks to human health, across twelve product categories.

Each category has its own specific guidelines regarding the maximum permitted concentrations of certain ingredients, depending on various factors such as the type of product, its area of application, and consumer habits. IFRA regularly reviews and updates the IFRA Standards to reflect the latest scientific research and regulatory developments.

What are IFRA certificates?

The IFRA certificate assesses the compliance of a fragrance or essential oil blend with the IFRA Standards. This document confirms that a supplied product meets the requirements set by the IFRA Code of Practice for its intended use. It does not replace the safety assessment of the finished product. However, toxicologists require it as part of the safety evaluation of cosmetic products.

Suppliers of fragrance blends and essential oils provide a certificate of conformity with IFRA Standards for the relevant categories covered by the IFRA guidelines.
